DSTI’s role in STEM Education:

The STEM Program was officially launched in March 2019 by the Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI). The program seeks to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education among young people and to equip them with knowledge and skills that will eventually be useful to them in the future. Under the program, students from Primary to Secondary will be introduced to concepts including Basic hands-on computer training, robotics, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, internet of things and air space management in the modern age among other new and emerging technologies, better known as Frontier Technologies for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The organization aims to have a STEM program through the launch of STI Clubs. The aim is to have a STI Club in each Secondary School by end of 2020.

Purpose:

The Division of Science Technology and Innovation in collaboration with Ministry of Agriculture, Climate Change and Environment and Ministry of Education has launched its second edition of the “Open Innovation Challenge for Climate Change” under DSTI’s STEM program. Climate change is a change in the pattern of weather, and related changes in oceans, land surfaces and ice sheets, occurring over time scales of decades or longer.

This initiative is a call to action for Seychellois (primary, secondary, post-secondary and general public) to join forces to tackle one of the most challenging phenomena of our times, and co-create impactful and innovative lasting solutions towards climate change. The potential creative solutions will be shared to government organization and private sectors to engage in the challenge.

Aim and objective of this competition:

• Make students enthusiastic about STEM education and Frontier technologies to tackle the current situation of climate change.
• Encourage participants to co- create impactful projects in a creative and innovative way.
• Get public and private sector involvement, so that practical projects can become feasible.

Different types of Innovation that may be impactful in combating climate change:

The challenge will be OPEN to any type of innovative projects. Listed below are few different types of Innovation that can help combat the issues related to climate change. These are defined bellow in Annex 1

• Social innovation
• Public Sector innovation
• Frugal innovation
• Disruptive innovation
• Grassroots/Sustainable innovation
• Reverse innovation
• Process and product innovation
• Open inclusive innovation
• Public sector innovation

Eligibility criteria:

The participation is open to school students from Primary, Secondary, Post-secondary students and the General Public

Important dates:

• Challenge launch: 19^th July 2022
• Last date of registration: 15^th September 2022
• Announcement of selected projects will be on 20^th September 2022
• Pitching competition for all categories: 22^th October to 26^th October 2022
• Award and Certificate ceremony: 31^st October 2022
